Mr. DAVID Jodhan, a 73-year-old Corentyne rice farmer and representative of the Numbers 52-74 Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), reportedly committed suicide on Friday by turning his gun on himself.

Jodhan of Number 58 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, shot himself through his right ear. Relatives said the prominent rice farmer had been suffering from nervousness and other health complications.

They said he regularly visited doctors but received no relief.

His estranged wife, Mrs. Janet Jodhan, 70, witnessed the incident. She said her husband committed suicide as a result of his failing health. They had lived together for more than 50 years she said.

Johan’s NDC colleagues lamented his loss, and said he was an ardent advocate for community development. They said that the Numbers 52-74 NDC has lost a very committed and active member.

Police are investigating the incident. (Arjune Poonai)
