Draft, telex facilities scarce

The US dollar has been trading at a high of $190, since around May of this year and there is currently a shortage of the currency in the form of drafts and telexes.
A check at most of the city banks on Wednesday revealed that there were either no draft or telexes available and if they were, the price went up depending on the quantity of currency sought.

The Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) reported that there were no telexes or drafts available for sale and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry tellers indicated that depending on the quantity being requested a higher price would have to be negotiated for the sale of these facilities.

The Guyana National Cooperative Bank (GNCB) was charging an additional $1 per transaction once you did not have an account with that bank.

The selling and buying rates for the respective banks as quoted Wednesday were:

Notes drafts,others

NBIC buying 180 184
selling 190 190

DBL buying 183 184
selling 189 190

GBTI buying 182 184 selling 189 191.25
BNS buying 180 184
selling 189 190

GNCB buying 182 184 selling 189 190

These rates have prevailed since May of this year and were preceded by a government intervention to the tune of some US$11 million before general elections in March, sources say.
