Guyanese boxers were whitewashed by British fighters on the card where Andrew Murray failed to win his second Commonwealth title on Tuesday night in Liverpool England.

According to Trinidad and Tobago trainer Boxu Potts, national lightweight champion Richard Howard and power punching Denny Dalton were also in the ring, but they all lost before Murray was knocked out by Richard Williams in the main bout of their light middleweight contest.

Potts who accompanied the three fighters said Dalton suffered a first round technical knockout at the hands of Gary Lockett while Howard lost on points to David Burke.

Dalton who scored a sensational seventh round victory here over a Trinidad opponent in August, could not reproduce that form in England and was outgunned from the first bell, got hurt early which forced the referee to end the bout.

Howard who also successfully defended his title on the TJ Promotions card in August, was outpointed in a six-rounder.

Potts who managers world rated Guyanese cruiserweight Wayne Braithwaite, feels Murray who suffered a third round TKO, gave a good performance but was the victim of a premature stoppage.

He said Murray was all over Williams in the opening rounds, but got caught and was floored by an overhand right and took the mandatory eight count.

According to Potts, Murray got up and was wrestled to the ground in the third round and the referee surprisingly stopped the contest.

"Even Sky TV reported that the end was premature," Potts said from Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.

Prior to the stoppage, Potts said Murray's jabbing style confused Williams a lot and which resulted in the home fighter getting cut in the first round. He added that had the fight gone past six rounds Murray would have stopped his man.

Potts also lamented that home-based Guyanese fighters are not always fit throughout the year. He said late call ups for fights in Europe for regional pugilists are the norm and urged that they stay fit at all times.

The Trinidadian said Dalton has potential but needs lots more gym work.

Potts also reported that Braithwaite will step up his training for his upcoming bout with Luis Azille next month in the United States.

The New York-based Braithwaite will move to Las Vegas to train with top notch American trainer Kenny Adams from Monday.

His fight will be an elimination contest to determine the challenger for World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez's title.
