DESIGNER Derek Moore is set to portray his `Finesse and Style' theme this evening when 10 young ladies from across Guyana compete in the Miss Guyana World pageant.

Moore is the Coordinator and Artistic Director of the pageant, and he promises a grand event, which will include a spectacular goodbye from the 2001 queen, Olive Gopaul.

The special celebrity invitees for tonight's show are top world model, Trinidadian Michelle Khan, and London-based Guyanese boxer Howard Eastman, who is the British Commonwealth WBA, EBU and IBO inter-continental middleweight champion.

Miss Guyana Universe 2002 Mia Rahaman, just back from Canada where she took part in various activities promoting Guyana, including Caribana, is also expected to attend the show.

The winner of tonight's pageant will walk away with the crown and title of Miss Guyana World 2002, the right to represent this country at the Miss World pageant on November 30 in Nigeria, $200,000 cash, and other prizes.

The show's presenters will be well-known television personalities Phoolkumarie Coopsammy and Ron Robinson.

The five finalists who will go on to compete for the crown were selected based on various pre-judging competitions and will only be known at the show.

Internet votes and phone calls during a television show last Tuesday on GTV 11 will be added up and will form part of the score to determine the top five.

On Thursday night, the delegates were pre-judged in the intelligence and evening gown segments.

Moore is hoping that the show will not go on for more than two hours. It is scheduled to start at 20:00 hrs.

The delegates will enter a globe from behind, the entrance will then be turned towards the audience and the delegates will emerge from various slopes.

They will then introduce themselves and step into the disco beats of `Remembering September' by the group Earth, Wind and Fire.

The Renaissance Recording Studio will then do their thing on stage.

According to Moore, the Studio will be releasing three of its singles at the pageant.

"When people hear this, they will think its international", he promises.

A dance item from the `Let's Dance' school will next feature on the programme.

The delegates will then come back on stage and will sit down for an informal interview on which they will not be judged.

Olive Gopaul will next perform on stage, singing a thank-you song for all those who supported her in making her reign a success. The Renaissance Recording Studio recorded the song.

After the intermission, Olive will be back on stage to do some illustrative modelling with all the prizes on display.

The girls will then appear in their evening gowns. Next, it will be the announcement of the final five, the final question, Olive's farewell walk, and then the crowning of a new Miss Guyana World.

Here is a final look at the contestants:

Ryiela Gaffar, 20, from Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara is sponsored by Health Club. The camera loves this girl and she may very well take away the Miss Photogenic prize. However, we're not so confident about the way she handles interviews. Ryiela has the most Internet votes for Miss Guyana and Miss Photogenic.

Empire Trust Enterprises Incorporated is the sponsor of Odessa Phillips, 19, a law student. She is an all-rounder, with her strongest points being her pleasant personality and her ability to communicate well. She would be a good choice if crowned.

Melesa Archer, 20, an International Relations student is sponsored by Dalgety Teas. She is easygoing, and if selected in the final five, will have to maintain composure as she always seems jumpy when someone starts to ask a question.

Ali Williams, 20, sponsored by Le Beleza Salon, has just completed a diploma in Public Communications at the University of Guyana. Ali has a good physique and can communicate well. If she gets the crown, Ali will just have to work on being outgoing.

Event W.I. Com sponsors Samantha Carndon, 22, a nurse. She has the attitude of a model, is charming, and has a beautiful smile. Besides being short, Samantha's other disadvantage is that she slips up whenever answering questions.

Marceline Basdeo, 23, is sponsored by Action Tyre. This girl has a loaded portfolio. With a Bachelor of Social Science degree in accounting, she knows the kicks of the karate discipline Taekwando, can do ballroom dancing and swim. She has done well in all of the pre-pageant events. A place in the top five seems sure for Marceline.

L Mart Exclusive Furniture sponsors Marita Persaud, 23. This Pomeroon girl is simply adorable, and were she not short, she would make a perfect queen. She is beautiful, outgoing and it is possible for everyone to like her. Don't be surprised if she's voted Miss Congeniality.

It seems like a done deal for Danielle McIntyre, 21, sponsored by Dutch Trading, to get into the top five. Besides other positive qualities, she is approachable and always willing to lend an ear.

Maliza Walton, 20, sponsored by Infinity Boutique, wants to interview Nelson Mandela. She might just get the chance if she wins tonight's pageant and the Miss World crown. Maliza is a sure bet for a place in the top five. She is a reporter, but she has no problems being interviewed herself. Maliza would not be such a bad choice for Miss Guyana.

Candida Telles, 22, with a diploma and degree in Computer Science, is sponsored by the overseas-based Organisation for Social and Health Advancement for Guyana. Candida has the height for a queen. She has developed well since she joined the pageant. However, her voice has failed her and she has not managed to model well. Besides that, Candida has a nice personality and is set to stun the National Cultural Centre audience with her "Spanish" look tonight.

The previous events for the pageant have turned out well, and if that's any indication, tonight's show will be a definite hit.
