THE People's Progressive Party (PPP) says this is not a time to be nit picking and taking advantage of the fears of the citizens in order to curry support or exploit weaknesses.

In a media release yesterday, the main partner in the governing PPP/Civic alliance said it continues to note with concern the situation in the country.

"Criminal and political acts of destabilisation have created tensions in our country. The vast majority of people find these attacks repugnant and alien to the good relations that have always existed between our peoples", it said.

The PPP said remains committed to contributing to initiatives, which will restore relative stability to the country.

"We note with appreciation the efforts of President Bharrat Jagdeo and the PPP/C government to boost the law enforcement capabilities of the Police and the support given by the military to this process. We are confident that in due course, law and order will prevail in our country.

"History has repeatedly foretold that lawlessness does not have the final say in civilised countries. The hand of the law is long and eventually those guilty of these atrocities will be brought to justice", the party said.

In the meantime, the PPP remains welded to the goal of ensuring a more favourable environment for stability in the country, the release said.

"We welcome the good offices of the civil society grouping whom we see as an important social force in the country.

"While we understand that rebuilding of trust on both sides of the political divide is a process that will take time, our party remains willing to do all that is possible to act in the best interest of the nation.

"We urge all the political actors to follow suit. This is certainly not a time to be nit picking and taking advantage of the fears of the citizens in order to curry support or exploit weaknesses.

"Neither is this the time for political leaders to be sending the wrong signals to criminal elements in the country", it urged.

It said that in democratic countries, issues of security and stability go beyond partisan interests.

Nothing can be served by inciting further deterioration in the affairs of the country since no party, no matter how desperate it is for power, wants to inherit a graveyard or an economic wasteland, the PPP said.

"This is therefore a time for a concerted and united stand against crime and instability in the country.

"The national interest will be served if all sides come together in a united campaign against crime.

"Our party remains open to dialogue as a means of settling disputes and is prepared to meet with interested parties to advance political social and economic initiatives to restore stability to the country."

The release added: "We take this opportunity to commend those political parties and personalities who have shown great fortitude in speaking out against the atrocities in the country.

"Many who have done so are persons wedded to the struggle for justice and democracy.

"The PPP notes the sincerity of these appeals and urges that all who cherish peace and freedom in the country echo these calls."
