PROFESSIONAL boxing returns to Linden this weekend as former Olympian Dillon Carew makes his debut in promoting a sport he excelled in at the national and regional level.

Carew will be staging a five-bout card under the Smart Touch Promotions banner, of which he is manager. Some 26 rounds of blistering action are billed for the Mackenzie Sports Club on Saturday from 19:00 hrs.

Lindener Cassius Matthews will clash with Shawn Holder in the main bout in a catch weight between Lightweight and Junior Welterweight over six rounds.

The main supporting bout will pit Gwendolin O’Neal and Geraldine Cox in a rematch in the 79 kg division over four rounds.

Laurex Benn meets Wayne Briggs in a welterweight encounter over six rounds and Linden Arthur takes on Errol Trotman over six rounds in a featherweight clash.

The fast-rising Leon Moore, just back from a successful campaign in Venezuela, completes the card with a super-bantamweight four-rounder against Wayne Coates.

Boxers are preparing at the Guyana Defence Force, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Republican and the Gordon Carew gyms.

Carew, who successfully represented Guyana in the amateur ring, qualified for the Barcelona Olympics, having put in a dazzling performance in the Pre-Olympic Box-off in Argentina. He was probably the Best Boxer in that qualifying tournament for South American boxers, but the team had to leave for home before the official announcements were made.

The boxer tries his hand in promoting a sport he still loves, making a first attempt last October 26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall but that was aborted because of the cost.

“It was too expensive and I had no sponsorship,” Carew told Chronicle Sport.

Carew explained that many business houses were complaining of the poor business because of the current situation. But the former boxer was determined to bring off the card and chose the mining town.

“It is more economical,” Carew said.

The new promoter disclosed that he was still awaiting word from one of the bottling companies. A furniture store giant asked him to check back today.

Tickets go on sale from today at a cambio in Linden and Comfort Zone Taxi at Dennis and Middleton Streets. Carew is the manager of the latter entity.

The cost of tickets up to Friday is $300, while on fight day Saturday the cost will be $500. (Isaiah Chappelle)
