SOME 26 rounds of fistic fury will engulf the Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden tonight as Smart Touch Promotions, in collaboration with Comfort Zone Taxi Service, stages its first professional boxing card from 19:00 hrs.

The main bout will pit hometown boxer Cassius Matthews against Shawn Holder over six rounds. They appear in a catch weight between lightweight and junior welterweight.

Matthews has three wins, a draw and a loss from five appearances. He is favoured by World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, who will be a special guest at the five-bout card.

Braithwaite knows both boxers from amateur days and contends that Matthews is more skilful and Holder was out of the ring for sometime.

Holder, however, is known for his resilience, roughing it out with the likes of former World Boxing Association Welterweight champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis.

The world-rated Gwendolin ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil clashes with Geraldine Cox in the 79 kg division over four rounds. The undefeated O’Neil is rated number two in the world by the Women’s International Boxing Association.

Much venom is expected from the encounter because O’Neil publicly declared that she did not like Cox.

A good display should come from the fast-rising Leon Moore, just back from a successful campaign in Curacao, when he takes on Wayne Coates in a super-bantamweight four-rounder.

Moore is undefeated in three fights, all ending with knockouts. His latest victim was Otis ‘Wonder Boy’ Zimmerman whom he put away in round two in a Curacao card. He will be fighting under the guidance of former Caribbean champion Siebert Blake.

In the two other bouts, Laurex Benn meets Wayne Briggs in a welterweight encounter over six rounds while Linden Arthur takes on Errol Trotman over six rounds in a featherweight clash.

Boxers are preparing at the Guyana Defence Force, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Republican and the Gordon Carew gyms.

This card should produce some blistering bouts because many of the boxers will be out to prove that they still have what it takes to win, despite being out of the ring for lack of cards being staged here.

Former Olympian and National welterweight champion Dillon Carew, the manager of both the promotion and the sponsor, is trying to lessen that vacuum created by the cost of staging local cards.

Carew had to move the card from the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall because of costs, to the mining town. As long as he gets the support through attendance, more cards may be forthcoming.

The former boxer was at the venue since yesterday to ensure that all arrangements for the card are in place. (Isaiah Chappelle)
