Junior lightweight boxer ‘Hurricane’ Hugo Lewis has taken his winning formula to the United States of America where he has chalked up three victories since arriving there over five months ago.

Lewis’ last victory was on August 10 when he appeared on a card on the internationally acclaimed Showtime television network.

The 28-year-old Guyanese defeated American Adan ‘El Texano’ Hernandez by a majority decision in an eight-round contest.

The fight was held at the Saboba Casino in California. Lewis dropped the previously undefeated Hernandez midway into the fight and thereafter kept up a steady body attack.

His record has improved to 13-1-0 with 10 knockouts. His coach Colin Morgan told Stabroek Sport that the undefeated Lewis will be back in six weeks when he will fight a 10-rounder.

The Guyanese is being prepared at the world famous Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, New York. Morgan said that his charge will have at least two more fights before year end.

“Hugo has won one fight by knockout since he has been in New York. We have a lot of plans for him but he would not be rushed,” Morgan said.

“He is a good fighter and just needs proper training and he will be in the big league. He is still undefeated, still young and has a bright future,” Morgan added.

Lewis is still the holder of the local junior lightweight title which he won last Boxing Day when Vincent Howard quit in the 10th round.

His only draw came on September 14 1996 when Lewis was dropped by Howard in round two, but rebounded to take the fight to his arch rival.
