The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) plans to embark on an outreach programme next year in its effort to popularise the sport and attract a wider cross section of players.

Speaking at their Recognition Reception at the GCC pavilion on Wednesday evening, GSA president Khalil Alli said the association recognises that there is a need to get more persons involved.

Alli noted that the association has enjoyed successes over the years, but said if more persons get involve lots more can be achieved.

An accountant by profession, Alli said access to courts and equipment are two major bugbears that the association plans to deal with in the new year.

According to Alli, his association has requested assistance from its overseas based players. "We are looking towards our overseas based players to assist in the area of equipment and this will assist us in our expansion programme," Alli stated.

Alli said he visited the squash court at Enmore recently and saw youths with a natural aptitude for the sport. He also noted the natural talent that abounds at the Hampton Court, Essequibo.

Alli noted the locals success at the recently concluded Central American and Caribbean Games where Guyana won one silver and five bronze medals. He also noted their successes at the junior and senior Caribbean championships and their participation at the Commonwealth Games.

Special mention was made of Kristina King, Damien Fernandes, Nicolette Fernandes and Shawn Badrinauth who had an outstanding year on the local and Caribbean circuit.

Alli thanked the many sponsors who supported the association during the year and issued a call for more sponsorship. "we want potential sponsors to look at squash as not just another sport, since it brings recognition to the country, " Alli stated.
