ELECTRONIC scoring was used for the first time locally on an exciting opening night of the Under-16 and Under-17 amateur boxing tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

At least two fights were bungled as judges got it wrong in an otherwise smoothly staged 28-bout programme that showcased the nursery of the sport that has put Guyana on the map over the years.

The first fight in which the scorecards reflected great disparity was the blistering encounter between Stephan Gouveia of Harpy Eagles gym and Harry Thompson of Ricola gym in the 60-64 lb division.

Gouveia attacked Thompson with a flurry to head and Thompson was twice counted, although Thompson was also getting in shots. Then in the second round, Thompson got the better of bruising toe-to-toe exchanges, even ending the round stronger. In the third round, Thompson scored left-right combinations to head as Gouveia moved in. Gouveia was clearly tired and fell twice. The fight brought the crowd to a raucous crescendo shouting: Harry, Harry, Harry.

But to the astonishment of everyone, two judges awarded the fight to Gouveia for a 2-1 decision.

The scorecards read: judge one - 19-12, 27-24, 15-15 for 61-51 total; judge 2 - 41-30, 12-5, 17-27 for a 70-62 total and judge 3 - 29-24, 36-36, 17-50 for a 72-110 total.

Fortunately the judges settled down with the new gadget and the only other disparity occurred in bout number 13 in which Delon Allicock of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) fought his heart out only to lose by a 2-1 decision to Sherwin Young (Harpy) in a 90-94 lb division scrap. Only Linden Torrington seemed to have gotten it correct on this occasion.

Young, however, redeemed himself by returning to meet Nigel Braithwaite (Ricola) in the final bout for the night, ending the fight in the first round with accurate and solid shots to head. After Braithwaite was counted a second time, the referee stopped the contest.

In the other bout in the division, Delon Charles (FYF) wrested a unanimous decision over Michael Payne (Harpy).

The night began with Jamal Hardy (One Mile Boxing Gym) getting the nod over Devon McRae (Harpy) after a blistering third round, with toe-to-toe exchanges in the 55-59 lb division.

Travis Bartholomew (Harpy) needed just one minute in round two to put away Kurt Vasconcellos (Ricola) using his reach well, having his opponent counted twice.

Hardy and Bartholomew clashed later in evening, with Hardy getting a close 2-1 decision.

The other fight in that division went to Kelwyn Rock (Young Lions) who gained a unanimous decision over Marlon Darrell (Ricola), countering with accurate shots to head.

In the 60-64 lb division, Michael Jordan (FYF) dominated to gain a unanimous decision over Anthony Stephens (Lions) but gave a walkover to his brother Dexter, later in the evening.

Kellon Peters (One Mile) dominated Stanley Abrams (FYF) with some stabbing lefts, followed with right hooks, getting a unanimous decision. He later clashed with Gouveia, the winner of the disputed bout, and Gouveia redeemed himself with a 2-1 decision.

The first fight in the 70-75 lb division went to Clevon Parks (Lions), who knocked down Jaal Cozier (Harpy) for an eventual unanimous decision. He was later disqualified in round two and Shemrick Peters won the place in the final.

Shemroy Peters (One Mile) gained a unanimous decision over Christopher Small (FYF) in the other bout in the division.

In the 85-89 lb division, Josiah Davis (Lions) had a unanimous decision over Carlton Scott (Ricola) and Clive Atwell (Ricola) was accurate with clean left-right shots to head, but surprisingly one judge scored against him for a 2-1 decision over Naphtali Chickery (Harpy).

Edward Skeete (Guyana Defence Force gym) gained a unanimous decision over Devon Charles (FYF) but lost to Atwell later in the evening by a 2-1 decision.

The peewee fights attracted much excitement, with Branco Gouveia putting away Leon Semple (One Mile) in the third round in the 40-44 lb division, while Kevin Allicock (FYF) had a unanimous decision over David Prince (Ricola) in the 45-49 lb division.

There were two unanimous decisions in the 50-54 lb division, one going to Xavier Payne (Ricola) over Devon Charles (Harpy) and the other to Roy Collins (Harpy) over gym-mate Deon Martin.

Carlos McPherson (Lions) had a 2-1 decision over Delon Prince (FYF) in the 65-69 lb division and Roy Lepps (One Mile) gained a unanimous decision over Leon Friendez (FYF) in the 80-84 lb division.

After just one minute 15 seconds Daimee Allicock (FYF) put away Travis Gittens (Harpy) in the 100-104 lb division. The referee stopped the contest after Gittens was counted a third time.

Romeo Norville (Harpy) won the first 110-117 lb division with a unanimous decision over Earl Sobers (Ricola) and the Dennis Thomas (Harpy) punished Boigny Miggins (FYF) with a wicked left and vicious uppercut to win in the first round, after Miggins was disqualified for ducking.

The finals were due to take place last night at the same venue with some 18 bouts.
