`PRETTY’ Dennis Thomas easily boxed his way to the Best Boxer title in the National Under-16 & Under-17 tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night.

With 15 points, the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) copped the Best Gym crown and its coach Siebert Blake got the Best Coach title.

Young Lions of Linden scored ten points, Harpy Eagles of Albouystown nine, One Mile Boxing Gym eight and the recently resuscitated Ricola, six.

With crisp, accurate lefts, followed with vicious uppercuts, Thomas (Harpy Eagles) won the 110-117 lb division with a unanimous decision, but probably because his opponent was gymmate Romeo Norville he was less attacking than in his first fight against Boigny Miggins, whom he put away in the first round on Friday night. The 14-year-old was still the pick of the boxers.

Only one fight did not go the distance. Quasy Craig (FYF) hammered Deceius Mundo of Ricola with solid left-right combinations to head, and the referee counted Mundo three times, thus had to stop the contest in one minute 27 seconds of the first round in the 105-109 lb division.

Jason Grant, a former Best Boxer at this level, again beat Daimee Allicock in an exciting 100-104 lb division encounter. Grant pinned Allicock on the ropes and landed two solid left to head in round one.

But both boxers sent few shots in the second. In the third round, Grant again pinned Allicock, this time in the neutral corner, tagging him with clean shots to head for the unanimous decision.

The night actually began with Bout 3 on the programme because the boxers for the first fight were not present and officials of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association realised it was already after the 18:00 hrs scheduled start. Roy Collins (Harpy) got the unanimous decision over Xavier Payne (Ricola) in the 50-54 lb division.

In the 55-59 lb division, Jamal Handy (One Mile) gained a unanimous decision over Kelwin Rock (Lions), while the Dexter Jordan/Stephan Gouveia clash in the 60-64 lb division, failed to produce the expected sparks and Jordan (FYF) got the unanimous decision over Gouveia (Harpy).

Excitement really began when Dexter Ray (Ricola) and Branco Gouveia (Harpy) entered the ring for the clash that should have started the night in the 40-44 lb peewee division.

Ray was all over Gouveia and receiving a solid headshot, Gouveia was counted in the first. Gouveia was down from a right hook to head in the second round and he was again counted. Ray continued dominating to take the unanimous decision.

In the 45-49 lb division, Mark Forde (One Mile) was twice counted in the second round. He was again counted in round three as Kevin Allicock (FYF) landed some telling left jabs and right hooks to easily win the fight unanimously.

Carlos McPherson (Lions) used his reach well to land some effective jabs on Marvin Ajeday (Ricola) who was eventually counted in round three. McPherson got the unanimous decision.

Shemrick Peters (One Mile) wrested a unanimous decision over gymmate Shemroy Peters in the 70-74 lb division, while another One Mile boxer Roy Lepps had a unanimous decision over Alex Abrams (FYF) in the 80-84 lb division.

In the 85-89 lb division, Josiah Davis (Lions) came back to take the 2-1 decision after he was counted when Clive Atwell landed a left-right combination to head, while Sherwin Young (Harpy) also got a 2-1 decision after bruising toe-to-toe exchanges from round two with Delon Charles (FYF).

Before the Under-17 boys took the ring, two girls clashed in the first of what would become a feature of future amateur programmes.

After toe-to-toe exchanges that brought the modest crowd to its feet shouting excitedly, Shaguhn Mariana (One Mile) got the nod for the 2-1 decision over the bigger built Roschelle Toney (FYF).

Damian Robinson (FYF) was counted in the first round and again in the second round, with gymmate Simeon Hardy getting the unanimous decision in the 112 lb division, while the highly touted Yusuf Ali (FYF) dominated the 122 lb division bout with overhand rights and Edmond Dieloo (Lions) was eventually counted in the third round. Ali won a unanimous decision.

In the 133 lb division, Randy Tello (Lions) sent whip-like left jabs, and interjected with uppercuts until Joel McRae (FYF) was down and was counted. Tello repeated his shots and McRae was counted a second time in the first round. McRae was warned for holding.

Tello connected a solid uppercut to head and McRae held on. He was warned again in the second round, while McRae sustained a count in the third round. The unanimous decision was clearly Tello’s.

The trophies were donated by the National Sports Commission. An Under-20 programme is on the cards for next month.
