In the wake of reports of looting during last Saturday's fire that razed a major portion of New Amsterdam's commercial centre in Pitt street, the regional administration of Region Six is calling on the police to investigate and apprehend those who were involved in such incidents.

And the East Berbice/Corentyne administration says it joins with the business community in "condemning this dastardly, heinous and shameful act [of looting]," a release said.

The Region Six administration also notes that the after effects of the tragedy in which 13 buildings were destroyed will impact heavily on the business community with attendant loss of employment and income for several hundred persons.

President Jagdeo and a party of regional and government officials visited the Pitt street area around 9:15 am on Monday morning and expressed their sympathy to those who suffered losses. While expressing deep regrets to those who suffered losses, the regional administration is also extending a hand of friendship and understanding with the hope that everyone can work together to rise once again from the ashes, the release concluded.
