Shawn Garnett became the latest boxer from Guyana to blaze the world title trail when he won the World Boxing Council Latino junior middleweight title via a 12-round unanimous decision in Florida on Saturday night.

Garnett, based in the USA, defeated Ephanfanio Mendoza in the fight on the under card of the Michael Moorer versus Otis Tisdale card held at the Seminole Indian Casino in Coconut Creek.

Reports from internet web site Fightnews.com state that the Guyanese was well prepared and frustrated his opponent with “in and out” fighting style.

Garnett remained evasive throughout the encounter and would throw hard combinations before retreating Fightnews reported. In the end the judges scored it 115-112, 118-109 and 119-108 for Garnett who improved his record to 9-1-1 with two knock outs.

It was the second defeat for Mendoza in 20 fights. The fight was watched by recently crowned heavweight champion Roy Jones Jr among others. (Steve Ninvalle)
