As the popularity of female boxing in Guyana surges, we decided to ask the man/woman-in-the street for their thoughts on this spectacle, as well as whether they believe women should be allowed to box. These were their reactions:

Leita McRae - student: `If that is the way they want to live, it’s their decision and they have to live with it. Personally, female boxing does not interest me. As a woman I can’t imagine going into the ring and having someone punch away at my face. My face is precious. But still, it’s not necessarily less entertaining, because there are some people who like it. Still I don’t believe that women should not be allowed to box. That is their choice. Just as if a woman wanted to do mechanical engineering, it is her choice and will be her decision in life. I think that women should be free to do anything they want, that means everything that men can do.’

Andrew George - cane cutter: `If women have the ability to do it they should be allowed to do it. I watch boxing and I know that it can be violent. In fact, when anyone steps into the ring I think they put their life at stake. But, if they have the ability, its a chance for them, a chance for success.’

Lovern Samaroo - `I don’t think women should be allowed to box, I prefer to see men box because it’s more of a man’s sport. And men box better than women and it’s more entertaining. It is just one of those activities that men can do that women can’t do. Women just don’t look right boxing and I personally believe that it is too violent. Just like wrestling, it’s just too violent.’

Orlando Smith - private sector employee: `I find female boxing interesting. It has its latent entertainment. I think it’s more funny than men boxing and that is why I watch it. As for those who think that is too dangerous for women, they need to realise that women are now doing almost the same things as men and boxing shouldn’t be any different, it’s their choice.’

Errol Franklin - vendor: `I believe if they love the sport women should be allowed to box. I don’t mind females boxing and if that is their heart’s desire there is no sense in trying to change their minds.

Nyota Peters - athlete: `I don’t see a problem with it and most of the criticism that you might hear only comes from here. But the sport is accepted internationally. I watch female boxing and I think it’s as much fun and as entertaining as male boxing. If they don’t believe that it is not too violent it doesn’t matter what other people think, it’s their lives that are at risk.’

Kemone Deane - student: `Yes, women should be allowed to box, why not? We are allowed to do anything we want to do and we should have the right. Nothing is wrong with it. Nothing is wrong with boxing. Although it is dangerous, it’s a sport and there are a lot of things more dangerous than boxing. These women, like everyone else, know what they are getting into and what they have to do.’

Dillon Granville - musician: `I enjoy it. I really enjoy watching these women trying to do their stuff like men. And once they follow the rules they will be safe. Although I admit that the sport is more dangerous for women than for men, I know women can get harmed easily, since they are more sensitive than men, especially in the bust area. But I don’t think that because of that women should be banned from boxing. It’s still just a sport and once they abide by the rules they should be safe.’

Clefton - carpenter: `Women should be allowed. It’s just a game. Just a sport. Just like men boxing, it’s like any other sport. If women choose to fight, it is their choice. People say that it is entertaining and I would like to see more of it.’

Elsa Barker - cook: `Yes, women should be allowed to box. I don’t think it’s a violent sport. It’s just like any other sport and if a woman chooses to box there is no problem with that, they are just as entitled as men. I enjoy watching it, I think it’s fun and I don’t really see anything wrong with it.’
