President Bharrat Jagdeo says he is pleased with the progress made with the implementation of agreements contained in the communiqué signed between himself and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday the President commended Mr. Corbin for the bold step he took in signing the communiqué noting that the successful implementation of the agreements would transform the governance landscape of Guyana, fostering greater political stability which would be in the interest of the nation.

Rehearse! Rehearse! Rehearse!

WITH less than 48 hours remaining before the final gong is sound on the Miss Guyana Talented Pageant 2003, these 15 of the 17 delegates were caught rehearsing to “get it right” at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) yesterday.

Themed `Flowers in Bloom’, the pageant Saturday night promises to be a crowd thriller if run-up activities are to be precursor.

The President acknowledged that there have been slippages in the implementation process, but this he attributed to “purely bureaucratic reasons.”

One of the innovations in the dialogue process with Mr. Corbin is the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to review progress from time to time being made with the implementation of agreements and if they are delays to address them in a timely fashion, the President disclosed, adding that this feature was absent during the dialogue with the late Opposition Leader Mr. Desmond Hoyte.

The President emphasised that there is a need to ensure that statements and actions are consistent with the agreements and spirit of the communiqué because if they are not the dialogue process could be undermined.

Some people will not agree with the process, but this is the time to give leadership and not to make statements simply to justify that there has not been a sell out to the other side, the President urged.

“I think we need to make sure from both sides that our statements and actions are consistent with the spirit and the letter of the communiqué. It does not serve us well if by our statements and actions we undermine the communiqué. Many things that we have agreed to within the communiqué, that could significantly, when implemented transform the governance landscape in Guyana,” the President declared

He also expressed satisfaction with the work of the established Parliamentary Committees and Commissions, announcing that he would shortly be consulting with the Leader of the Opposition on his nominees for the Judicial and Police Service Commissions.
