Guyana may be on the verge of hosting its first ever world title boxing match next month. Stabroek Sport has been reliably informed that a local promoter has approached the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) with plans to stage the bout.

A usually reliable source stated that the fight is scheduled to be staged on August 30 here and will be for the Womens International Boxing Association (WIBA) light heavyweight title.

It is understood that WIBA has agreed in principle to the staging of the bout here once all conditions are complied with. The WIBA light heavyweight title became vacant after the champion Jacqui Fraer Lyde failed to defend the title by June 30 and was stripped.

American Veronica Simmons is rated number one by that body in the light heavyweight division while Guyanese Gwendolyn `The Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil is next in line.

The GBBC will have to scrutinise the application to host the fight before approval is granted. Efforts yesterday to make contact with members of the GBBC proved futile.

Professional Boxing has seen a massive turn around in attendance in Guyana since native sons Andrew `Sixhead’ Lewis, Wayne `Big Truck’ Braithwaite and `Vicious’ Vivian Harris won world titles.

The GBBC Independence card in May and Smart Touche’s `Rumble in the Desert last Month in Linden both drew large crowds.
