A US$149,861 contract for the design and execution of a Public Awareness/Education Programme with respect to the Mandela Avenue dumpsite was approved by Cabinet at its meeting on Tuesday.

The programme, entitled Environmental Improvement of the Georgetown Interim Disposal Site, is aimed towards informing the public about innovative methods for disposing of their rubbish, among other things, Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon said yesterday.

The programme is being executed in light of the need to continue to have the Mandela site open and operational despite the many setbacks associated with its functioning including delays in establishing the proposed site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

Until the time that the new Eccles facility is made functional the Mandela site would have to continue to receive the city refuse.
