The two public holidays of Good Friday and Easter Monday will be observed on April 9 and April 12, respectively.

A Ministry of Home Affairs notification said that the holidays have been declared according to the provisions of Section 6 of the Public Holidays Act, Chapter 19:07 of the Laws of Guyana.

Good Friday is observed by Christians as the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified and many of them attend church services on a day that is generally solemn.

However, Easter Monday is celebrated on a countrywide scale by family picnics and kite flying, which signifies Christ's resurrection from the dead.
