Minister within the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Bibi Shadick is appealing to mothers to be more vigilant with their children.

The call is not specific to girl children, Shadick said, because boys are also being sexually abused.

According to a release from the Government Infor-mation Agency (GINA) the appeal comes in the wake of 45-year-old Farouk Mohamed being remanded to prison on charges of indecently assaulting a six-year-old and a four-year-old. Shadick said the children would bear these scars for the rest of their lives.

GINA quoted her as saying, "You can remove a child from the situation but you cannot take that situation from the child."

The minister is urging parents to take abused children to the ministry to receive therapy to assist in minimising harmful effects.

Shadick said she hoped the new men's group Men of Purpose will take matters of this nature on board.
