IN a bruising and exciting battle, Linden Arthur sent Kelsy Ross to the canvas with a vicious right hook that gave him the majority decision in the featherweight clash as the undercards upstaged the big bouts of the Smart Touch/Freeman boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Saturday night.

And Shelly “The Agicola Boom” Gibson chewed up Margaret “Chico” Walcott for a majority decision in a fight that had the crowd on their feet.

Arthur and Ross had no jabs to offer, just solid shots to head and body, with the advantage switching sides in the earlier rounds. But while Ross shots were just thrown, Arthur selected his target and scored with devastating effect, a performance probably never before seen by him.

Then working through Ross’ attack in round five, Arthur found an opening and connected a powerful right hook to jaw, and Ross had a rear bump onto the canvas.

In the sixth and final round, Ross threw his hands without let up, pinning Arthur to the ropes. But Arthur, the more controlled fighter of the two, sought the openings and got in some solid and telling blows.

Then “The Boom” indicated early with some solid straight rights to head, that “Chico” was up for her chewing. In the third round, Gibson dominated with her scoring rights, with Walcott clinching to survive.

The pattern continued in the remaining rounds of the catchweight encounter as Gibson scored with solid left jabs and telling left-right to head. Walcott did get in some of her own, but “The Agricola Boom” returned to wrest the majority decision.

One fan said: “Shelly chewed up the Chico and spat it out at the end.”

Earlier, former Commonwealth Games participant Rudolph Fraser fought to a unanimous decision over Cecil Smith in the opening bout.
