A US-based Guyanese woman was found dead in her three-bedroom apartment on Sunday, apparently strangled by a male relative.

Police have since taken the man into custody and charges are likely to be laid shortly.

Dead is Joycelyn Abra-hams London, 57, of North Carolina, USA. She was said to have been living overseas for over 20 years.

Her uncle, David Abra-hams told this newspaper yesterday that London's body was discovered in her home on Sunday when a check was made by her eldest son who had not heard from her since the previous Friday.

Abrahams said several calls were made to her home, but no one answered. He said the woman's son returned home on Sunday and after calling out for a long time and receiving no answer he kicked down the door.

In the house, the man found the dead body of his mother sprawled in her bedroom; her husband was lying on the bed. Neighbours said they had not heard any quarrelling nor did they notice the man leave the home all weekend.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she died as a result of strangulation, Abrahams said, adding that she had also received several chops about her body and appeared to have fought with her attacker.

Once London's body was found, her son made a report to the police who responded within minutes and cordoned off the area. They arrested the male relative shortly after.

London will be laid to rest tomorrow.
