The 38th anniversary of Guyana's independence will be commemorated at a black-tie affair on Saturday.

A report in New York Newsday states that the celebration - which also will recognise several community leaders - is being organised by the Guyana Tri-State Alliance and the Consulate of Guyana in New York.

President Bharrat Jagdeo, Consul General Brentnold F.R. Evans and Bayney Karran, Guyana's ambassador to the US, are scheduled to attend the event, which will be held in Queens at the Holiday Inn at JFK Airport, 144-02 135th Avenue, starting at 9 pm.

The honourees are long-time community leader Sybil Chester of Schieffelin & Somerset Co; anthropologist, linguist and educator Desrey Fox; Claire Goring, president of Guyana Cultural Association; Pandit Krishna Inderjit, known for his community work and the establishment of a Hindu temple in Brooklyn; businessman Joe Mohan, who provides hospitality and limousines for visiting dignitaries and students; Imaan Zameer Sattaur, the spiritual leader of the Masjid Al-Abidin mosque in Queens, who is involved in a host of community development projects; and filmmaker-humanitarian Rohit Jagessar, who recently completed a work on the history of Guyana.
