The Guyana Police Force says persons residing overseas who wish to apply for a Certificate of Character (Police Clearance) for any purpose are required to submit a set of fingerprints obtained from the country in which they reside.

In addition, they must supply a copy of their birth certificate, three colour passport-sized photographs and $500 as the application fee. The police said the application will then be processed and ready in five working days.

With regard to persons locally seeking a police clearance for the purposes of employment and travelling, they are required to produce their birth certificate, three passport-sized photographs and $500 as the application fee.

The application will then be processed and ready in five working days.

A release from the Public Relations Office of the Police Force said that sometime ago this newspaper published a letter in which the writer enquired the reason for the police not accepting identification cards when applying for a Police Clearance. The release clarified that this is due to the fact that it does not address the parentage and other vital information pertaining to the applicant which would assist in the identification of an individual especially if it is a case where two or more persons carry the same name.
