Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has expressed his confidence in the ability of Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to cope with the increased electricity demand during the holiday season.

His comment came during yesterday's sitting of the National Assembly following questions from the Opposition side of the House on the capability of GPL to ensure a dependable supply throughout the Christmas season.

Prime Minister Hinds assured the House that GPL had conducted maintenance on the generation, transmission and distribution components of its network at the beginning of the third quarter of the year, in anticipation of the increased demand.

“GPL has made adequate preparations to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for this period,” he assured, noting that additional spares have been procured to deal with possible eventualities.

As is traditional, customers consume additional electricity to power fairy-lights and other appliances during the Christmas season.

Additionally, the electricity grid was recently extended as part of an Un-served Areas Electrification Programme (UAEP) funded by the government in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

This has facilitated the expansion of electricity to approximately 220 communities countrywide. (GINA)
