BRONX, New York (CMC) – Guyana’s Raul Frank controversially won the US Boxing Association (USBA) light middleweight title when he beat American Terrance Cauthen on a technical knockout at the Paradise Theatre on Thursday night.

The referee stopped the bout at two minutes 59 seconds of the seventh round when Cauthen was floored, but his handlers are protesting the result.

Cauthen’s handlers are insisting that their fighter fell from an accidental clash of heads and that the contest should not have been awarded to Frank, especially since Cauthen led on points on all the judges’ cards at the time of the stoppage.

Cauthen got up from the blow, staggered a few steps, and then went back down at which point the bout was halted with the 38-year-old Frank being declared the victor.

Cauthen was ahead 60-54, 59-55, 59-55 on the judges’ cards when the bout was stopped.

Promoter Joe DeGuardia is protesting the result and the New York commission will hold a hearing next week.

With the result, the veteran Frank improves his record to 28 wins (14 knockouts) against five losses and three draws, while Cauthen, 30, dipped to 32 wins (9 knockouts) against four defeats.

Frank once fought for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title but lost on a 12-round unanimous points decision to American Vernon Forrest in May 2001.
