Australia's one-day international against the West Indies was
ruled a tie by International Cricket Council referee Raman Subba
Row today after two pitch invasions plunged the finish into
confusion.
Subba Row declared the fifth one-day match a tie after meeting
with Australian captain Steve Waugh, West Indies captain Jimmy
Adams and both team managers.
West Indies appeared to have eased home by one run after
Waugh failed to hit a winning four off the final delivery but Subba
Row decided the Australians were prevented from making a third
run to tie the game by the crowd.
With Australia chasing a target of 174 runs, Waugh hit a Keith
Arthurton delivery towards the mid-wicket fence.
Waugh and partner Shane Warne completed two runs before
Arthurton dislodged the bails as thousands of spectators invaded
the pitch.
Waugh then started running a third towards Arthurton's end, by
which time all three stumps had been taken by spectators.
To effect a run out Arthurton had needed to uproot one of the
stumps with the ball in his hand.
Subba Row did not immediately give details surrounding his
decision but was scheduled to do so in the next couple of hours.
The result was kept quiet at the ground to ensure the Australian
team could leave in safety.
In a match reduced to 30 overs because of overnight and morning
rain, the West Indies made 5-173 and then restricted Australia to
7-172.
Waugh finished on 71 not out, with Warne unbeaten on 19.
Adam Gilchrist made 44 before being run out.
Earlier Shane Lee and Warne led the bowling as the West Indies
made 5-173. Lee took 3-39 and Warne 2-36.
Lee dismissed openers Ridley Jacobs (33) and Sherwin
Campbell (41) in the same over before Warne got rid of Carl
Hooper (eight) and Jimmy Adams (seven), also in the space of
six balls.
Lee also chipped in with the wicket of local hero Shivnarine
Chanderpaul, caught on the long-on fence for 27.
No.7 Phil Simmons bumped up the total with a late slogging
innings, hitting two massive sixes.
