THE Finance Ministry has welcomed the recent adoption of the National Development Strategy (NDS) by the opposition People's National Congress/Reform (PNC/Reform).

In a statement Friday, the ministry said the adoption of the strategy was reflected in a recent whole page newspaper advertisement signed by PNC leader, Mr Desmond Hoyte and Mr Stanley Ming, leader of the Reform wing of the PNC.

Welcoming the move, the Finance Ministry said this "would vindicate the efforts and resources put into the preparation of the (NDS), especially by the scores of hardworking and dedicated Guyanese."

According to the Finance Ministry, this current position by the PNC clearly reverses an earlier stated position by Hoyte.

It pointed out that Hoyte, in a letter in the Stabroek News newspaper on June 30 last year, among other things, said:

"I have no wish to become embroiled, at this time, in any discussion or polemics related to the latest version of the NDS.

"This would be a distraction. I have repeatedly cautioned my party members and supporters not to allow their attention to be diverted from a priority political task..."

The Finance Ministry said that now that "it has recanted", it "anticipates that the PNC will contribute to the debate on this very important document at the appropriate time in the National Assembly."

The NDS was laid in the National Assembly on July 4, 2000.

"Perhaps, had the PNC taken such a stand in 1994, when the process was initiated by the Ministry of Finance, the strategy document would have been at either an advanced stage or even at some level of implementation," the ministry added.
