NORTH American Airlines (NAA), a flag carrier of the United States (U.S.) which began
operations here last July, will start a scheduled service from May 5.
NAA Vice-President, Marketing, Mr Bruno Scaldaferri made the announcement at the Monday opening
of their new Georgetown office, Lot 126 Carmichael Street.
The airline previously conducted business in the Promenade Plaza building on Middle Street,
also in the city, but relocated to more spacious premises to better cater for its expanding
business, he said.
In the gathering Monday were other NAA officials, U.S.-based Head of Management Information
Systems, Mr Deon Bedasie; Area Representative in Guyana, Ms Jenny DeBarros and Sales Manager,
Mr Junior Horatio.
President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Captain Gerry Gouveia,
President, Guyana Association of Travel Agents (GATA), Captain Debbie Gouveia and more travel
agents were also present.
Scaldaferri said the movement to Carmichael Street and the new schedule were clear and positive
signs that NAA is pleased with its venture to Guyana and would stay.
Debbie Gouveia said the presence of NAA would benefit not only travel agents but tour operators
who would be able to offer packages to visitors from New York and the rest of the U.S.
"With the imminent take off of our tourism drive in Guyana, we cannot over emphasise the
importance of more airlines operating into Guyana," she said.
The GATA President pledged that no effort would be spared to ensure hassle-free travel.
DeBarros said their start-up was an "act of faith" as they did not know whether the enterprise
would have been sucessful.
She expressed gratitude to NAA for the confidence shown in the Guyana market and herself and
Horatio, as Guyanese.
DeBarros offered thanks to the travel agents who stuck with them even when the going was rough
and urged them to continue as NAA seeks to enhance its service.
Horatio chaired the proceedings at which DeBarros said she was also grateful to staff who
endured cramped conditions over the past year.
