THE `fake American' deportee who called himself `Edgar Garfield Gibbons' has been indicted in the United States after officials determined he is a Jamaican named James Dean Collins.
The convict, who was deported to Guyana in 1999 and returned to the U.S. almost a year later, has been charged with four counts of violating Title 18, USC, Section 1001 (providing false information to immigration authorities, representing himself as a United States citizen, and falsifying information on government documents).
A press release from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalisation Service (INS) said yesterday that Collins, who for "nearly two decades deceived local, state and federal law enforcement by using a false identity, was indicted in the South District Court of the State of Texas.
Investigations revealed that Collins was born on 1960-03-12.
A U.S. Immigration Judge had ordered Collins removed to Guyana after he claimed under oath that he was Edgar Garfield Gibbons, a native and citizen of Guyana, the press release said.
It added that upon arriving in Georgetown, he was incarcerated by the Police because they questioned his Guyanese citizenship.
In January 2000, he filed a claim of United States citizenship. The INS was contacted by the U.S. Embassy in Guyana regarding the individual's claim, and an investigation was initiated.
While in Guyana, Collins told authorities that he was born in Monroe, Louisiana on 1958-09-11; and had attended school in the Houston area.
On 00-04-03 Collins was returned to the United States and questioned about his false admissions of nationality. With the assistance of the Harris Sheriff's Department, the INS was able to establish his true identity. Subsequently, a birth certificate was obtained from Jamaican officials.
According to the INS, the real James Garfield Gibbons did immigrate from Guyana in 1978, and presently resides in New Jersey, where he has been a law-abiding resident since his arrival into the United States
