NEW Guyana Marketing Corporation (NGMC) will be staging `Guyana Nite 2000' on Saturday, May 27, at Thirst Park, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, starting 17:00 hours.

A release from the Ministry of Fisheries, Crops and Livestock said the event is being held against the backdrop of last year's `Buy Local' campaign which was launched under the theme `Made in Guyana - Grown in Guyana'.

"Like Guyana Nite 1999, which was a resounding success, Guyana Nite 2000, is geared to showcase numerous exotic dishes depicting Guyana's cultural diversity in a unique way," the release stated.

It said dishes made from products grown or manufactured in Guyana will be on sale at more than 30 booths. These include black pudding, souse, jilaybee, gulgula, pow, pepperpot, cassava bread and pizza, barbecue chicken, pickled ham, sweet potato pudding and yogurt.

Fresh fruits, vegetables and ground provisions as well as other locally processed foodstuff will be sold at "relatively low prices" and a variety of fruit plants from National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) would be available.

In recognition of the need to cater for Guyanese of all ages, with special focus on children, Coney Island, pony rides, a clown and games will be there to entertain, together with music by Pete's Caribbean Fusion and Banks Invaders Steel Orchestra.

Guyanese from all walks of life are being encouraged to visit Guyana Nite 2000, taste the wonders of locally grown and manufactured products and become more aware of how these are equivalent to, if not better than imported ones, the statement said.

Tickets for entry could be obtained at $300 each from C & F outlets, NGMC, A.H.& L Kissoon Ltd and Thirst Park. Children under 10 years of age will be admitted free of charge.
