THE Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has come out in support of the proposed Beal spaceport investment after careful examination of the agreement and an insightful meeting with both the President and Prime Minister.

"After examining the agreement in all of its aspects, the association is of the view that the establishment of a spaceport in Guyana will greatly enhance the international image of the country in terms of the investment opportunities it offers for the future and the country's general development", THAG said in a press statement yesterday.

It said that based on evidence placed at its disposal and facts garnered from its own research on other spaceport facilities like Cape Canaveral in the USA and Kourou in French Guiana, it has found that aerospace activity has neither had no adverse effects on, nor in any way threatened the integrity of, their environments.

Moreover, the group said that their meeting with President Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Minister Sam Hinds on June 1 afforded them the opportunity to address and discuss their concerns, as well as those of others, with regard to the agreement and was satisfied that while a number of issues were yet unsettled, the establishment of the spaceport facility will be of overall benefit to Guyana.

The group is also supportive of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society's request that the government be directly involved in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which is a precondition to the construction of the facility and the commencement of its economic activity.

The association said it looks forward to the EIA being conducted in accordance with the agreement and trusts that it will meet with the approval of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"THAG assures with confidence that all mechanisms and compliances will be in place to monitor this investment for our country which will prove to be an enormous asset and boost the growth of the tourism industry, therefore gaining credibility and enabling us to develop and achieve our tourism plan", the statement said.
