Ulex crowned `Talented Teen 2000'

MISS Guyana Television Broadcasting Company (GTV), Essequibian Ulex Atwell, walked away with the `Miss Talented Teen 2000' crown Saturday night at the National Cultural Centre. The contest was organised by Simpli Royal.
The 18 year-old, a student of Global Technology, was a crowd favourite from the moment she made her sizzling appearance on stage.
After being crowned, an excited Ulex said she was quite confident all along and knew she would capture the crown.
She promised to do Guyana proud at the Miss Caribbean Teen Pageant scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago next month.
The aspiring pharmacist outdid her co-competitors in a keen encounter. Miss Rayon House of Fashion, 16-year-old Tabina Lyte was the first runner-up, while second runner-up was another crowd favourite, radiant 14-year-old Shonnet Moore, Miss Images, Beauty and Barber World.
The queen will receive $50,000 in cash, a $15,000 cash award to attend any institution or course of choice, one pair of diamond studded earrings from Diyaljee's Jewellery, a lifetime membership award from Movie World, a wardrobe of business, casual and evening outfits from Village Couture, piano classes for one year, and an album of the events of the pageant.
Adviser on Empowerment, Mr Odinga Lumumba was the chief judge. The others were: Ms Camille Ross, proprietrix of Unique Day Care Centre; Ms Jill Power, Advertising Executive of Power Marketing; Ms Cicely Austin, Head Mistress of Excel Prep School; Mrs Colleen Reis, former Diwali Queen and Miss Guyana Contestant, and proprietrix of Milady's Beauty Salon; Mr Man-nix Ross, computer expert; and Mrs Prudence Lewis-Bhola, GBC broadcaster and a former Miss Guyana contestant.
