PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo has offered support and best wishes to Andrew `Sixheads' Lewis, who is aiming to give Guyana its first world boxing title when he steps into the ring in Las Vegas tomorrow night to oppose American James Page for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title.

In a letter, sent to Lewis yesterday, the President said:

Dear Andrew,

On behalf of all Guyanese and on my own behalf and my government's behalf, I would like to offer you our support and best wishes as you seek this Saturday to bring our country its first world boxing title. We look forward to celebrating your victory over James Page.

You have already won Gold for Guyana on many occasions as you dominated boxing in the region. This culminated in your gaining a coveted place in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics wearing Guyana's colours.

With those records of achievement and the determination and dedication you have displayed, the realisation of your dream of winning Guyana's first world boxing title is now just a matter of time taking its course.

Be assured that all of Guyana will be behind you on Saturday night in Las Vegas in your quest to bring glory to yourself and our beloved country.

With best wishes for the fight.

Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Gail Teixeira will represent Guyana in an official capacity in Las Vegas tomorrow night. The minister leaves Guyana early this morning.

In an invited comment yesterday, the minister told Chronicle Sport that she is extremely proud to be asked by President Jagdeo to represent Guyana and to lend moral support to Lewis.

The minister feels Lewis has an excellent chance of landing Guyana's first world boxing title and she's certain that all Guyanese will be glued to their television in anticipation of a great victory. She said victory for Lewis will be a great Mashramani gift and something to celebrate by all Guyanese.

Teixeira said she's confident that Lewis has the courage and determination to bring glory to Guyana.

The PNC Reform also joined in wishing Lewis well.

In a press release yesterday, the PNC Reform said:

Dear Andrew, As the tour draws near for your date with destiny, please rest assured that you have the wholehearted support of the PNC Reform and indeed the Guyanese people. We are confident that the discipline and patience exhibited by you in the run-up to your fight for the world title as well as your desire to bring honour and glory to our beloved country will be the catalyst to victory.
