ST JOHN'S, Antigua, (CANA) - The West Indies cricket team has a US$350 000 incentive to win the World Cup, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said in a release yesterday.
The WICB said that if the team reaches the semi-finals they get US$50 000, and should they get to the final, they receive US$100 000 but to win the World Cup, the Windies will receive a bounty of US$200 000.
The Board said this incentive was negotiated with Carib Breweries as part of their US$1 million sponsorship of the West Indies team for World Cup 1999 and the England tour 2000.
WICB's chief marketing executive Chris Dehring said the players were very pleased with the incentive package that the Board had negotiated and were highly motivated to bring the Cup back to the Caribbean.
In addition to the West Indies team incentive, the 1999 World Cup offers a chance at the biggest prize money ever in the history of the World Cup.
In the Group matches, the winner will get US$6 000 per match and the loser US$3 000.
In the Super Six, the team finishing sixth will get US$27 500 and fifth place will receive US$52 500. The two losing semi-finalists will get US$100 000 each and the runner-up in the final will get US$150 000.
The champion World Cup team will cop US$300 000 along with the prestigious golden World Cup, the Board said, noting all of the money will go to the players.
The West Indies begin their World Cup campaign on Sunday with a match against Pakistan.
