A CONFIDENT Morvinia Sobers says she is "coping quite well" in the run-up to the Miss Universe contest night.

"It's hectic, but quite fascinating, having to cope with rehearsals, photo shoots, dinners, tours and all the rest of engagements, but I'm coping quite well," she told the Chronicle Friday.

"I know what I'm up to, there's no joke about it; it's stiff competition, but I am determined to make Guyana proud," she said in a brief telephone conversation from her hotel.

Morvinia said she was among 40 of the 85 delegates flown to Tobago on Monday on a special flight for a two-day pre-show segment of the competition.

That component of the pageant, which featured the delegates in bathing suits among other scenes, was shot at Pigeon Point, Arnos Vale Water Wheel for broadcast on the night of the pageant.

Morvinia said that the day after she arrived in Trinidad, all the other delegates were photographed and fitted by 10 leading local designers for a local fashion show on Monday evening at the Queen's Hall, St Ann's.

All contestants are on three floors at the Holiday Inn hotel and Morvinia's roommate is Miss Turks and Caicos.

She said although all the delegates are friendly, it is obvious they are each aware of the big night.

Among other engagements in which she will be involved before May 26 is the `Parade of Nations' tonight at the Memorial Park which will feature the delegates parading in four beautifully-decorated trucks around the Queen's Park Savannah. The parade highlights too, aspects of Trinidad's Carnival, accompanied by steel pan, tassa, African drums and Carnival costumes.

On May 21 there will be the `Presentation Show' at the Universe Centre, the `National Costume' display the next day and the `Dress Rehearsal' on May 25, all at the same venue. (WENDELLA DAVIDSON)
