MISS Guyana, Morvinia Sobers, was yesterday confident she can put her country in the spotlight when the curtains come down on the 48th annual Miss Universe Pageant tonight at the Universe Centre, Chaguaramas.

"I feel anxious. I am confident I can make my country proud", she told the Chronicle minutes after participating in one of two segments of rehearsals conducted yesterday with host Jack Wagner taking the delegates through their final paces.

Morvinia said she was anxiously looking forward to tonight although she was aware only one girl can wear the crown.

"These last days have been very tiresome. We have had long hours of rehearsals but in the end I know it will be rewarding", she said.

Asked about her impressions of the pageant and her relationship with the other delegates, Morvinia said "the Miss Universe Pageant is quite a memorable occasion.

"One cannot help but feel excited with all this pomp and ceremony.

"...I made lots of friends, even with the delegates who do not speak English. I think I have mastered the art of using sign language."

In addition to preparations for tonight's grand finale, Morvinia was yesterday among the group of Caribbean delegates who did promotional shoots for BWIA, the official carrier for the Miss Universe Pageant.

Between 11:30 and 13:30 hours yesterday, delegates from the 84 participating nations participated in the final rehearsals.

Co-owner of the Miss Universe Organisation Donald Trump was scheduled to join the delegates whom he would have seen for the first time, during rehearsals.

Trump arrived in the country earlier in the day.

On Monday, host Wagner caused quite a stir among the contestants and others when he arrived at the centre unannounced to watch the delegates go through the paces.

The 10 finalists who were chosen earlier during a presentation show will be announced during the first segment of the Miss Universe Pageant live telecast.

Wagner plays the character Dr. Peter Burns in the television show `Melrose Place'.
