Hoyte's threat not surprising - government

THE Government yesterday said it was not surprised by the latest threat from PNC leader, Mr. Desmond Hoyte, related to the impending privatisation of the Guyana Electricity Corporation (GEC).

"The PNC leader is holding himself out as a political scarecrow to frighten investors, and to frustrate further efforts at bringing a critically needed strategic partnership in the electricity sector," it said in a statement.

"His warning that the current investors should `take heed and quietly fade away' smacks of his anti-national obsession to oppose the privatisation at all cost."

The PNC leader yesterday said his party would not support legislation to advance the privatisation of GEC, threatening a "bundle of political problems" if the deal goes through.

The Government said it is "sad commentary that a person who now speaks glibly about `arrogance' and `contempt' had conspired to sell the GEC at a basement price of US$4M in a secret deal".

According to the Government, all Guyanese should support the efforts to "enhance the electricity sector" and reject Hoyte's attempts to drag them "into a new cycle of conflict."

The release noted that the deal is now far advanced.

Legislation, critical to the privatisation of the power company is to be debated in the National Assembly tomorrow.
