CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CANA - St. Lucia's Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony, is expected to head for Guyana sometime this week for talks with new President Bharrat Jagdeo on the Caribbean Community's continuous role in the Guyana political process, a spokesman for the Prime Minister said.
The 35-year-old Guyana leader, who has replaced the elderly and ailing Mrs. Janet Jagan, is reported to have responded promptly to Dr. Anthony's request for an early meeting.
Dr. Anthony, who has been charged with oversight responsibility for Guyana on behalf of CARICOM, is expected to be faced with a packed agenda during the visit, the spokesman said.
According to his spokesman, Anthony is down to meet representatives of all political parties, including the People's Progressive Party (PPP), the Civic group and the opposition People's National Congress (PNC) in addition to the CARICOM Secretary General and his representatives.
"Dr. Anthony will be expected to meet the leaders of the parties separately, and hold a press conference in accordance with an established convention when such persons visit," the spokesman said.
The CARICOM envoy will also be hoping to get an update on the dialogue taking place on the constitutional review process, triggered by CARICOM agreements aimed at political peace in Guyana after a controversial general election.
In a letter to Mrs. Jagan last week, Prime Minister Anthony stated that both of these important "contracts of faith" had contributed positively to the progress that has so far been made by all signatories.
He said he was certain the transition of leadership would guarantee the continuity of the process in Guyana as they relate to the fulfillment by the parties and CARICOM of the principles and tasks associated with existing accords.
