30-year-old Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis is a big, strong left-hander who strikes with power. Born in Guyana, he moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1996. He has amassed a professional record of 19-0-1 with 18 KOs and is rated #1 by the WBA at welterweight.
"Six Heads" is scheduled to face former champion James Page for the vacant WBA welterweight belt on February 17 (HBO) at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, in a fight that has been postponed twice before.
Last June 10, their fight was postponed when the main event, Evander Holyfield vs John Ruiz, was called off due to a Holyfield injury. Then, on August 10, Page did not report to Las Vegas for their scheduled title fight.
The WBA stripped Page of the title, then rated him #2 and agreed to allow him to fight Lewis for vacant WBA crown on Feb. 17
Lewis is handled by long-time East Coast manager Nelson Fernandez. "I knew we had someone special when Andrew knocked out Terrance Ali in two rounds," said Fernandez. "We then arranged to have him relocate to Brooklyn and work with all of our chief trainer (Angel DeJesus) and strength conditioning coach (Quinto Soto)."
Lewis got his nickname "Six Heads" at an amateur tournament in Guyana, Nelson explains. "In Andrew's first amateur fight, he dropped his opponent twice in the first round, then two more times in the second. The referee paused, looked into the eyes of the opponent and asked 'Do you want to continue?' and he answered 'Please stop the fight. I see six heads in front of me.' The name stuck and now even Andrew's mother calls him "Six Heads."
Team Lewis' training camp is located in cold, snowy Fernwood Resorts in the Poconos. Six Heads runs 6 miles a day on snowy mountain paths, has breakfast, and then goes to Paterson, NJ, (about a 90 minute car ride from the Poconos) where the actual training takes place at Joe Greer's Boxing Academy. "[Six Heads] loves to go to the gym and I love fighters who have that kind of work ethic," said Fernandez, "We all know he can punch, but he has excellent boxing ability too."
Lewis is also studying video tapes of Page in action including his W12 over Jose Lopez, W12 over Sam Garr and TKO11 of Freddie Pendleton. Fernandez says, "Page has a big left hook and likes to follow with a hard right. That's what we'll be looking for."
When things wind down, Fernandez leaves the Paterson, N.J. gym and visits his father Manuel who is bedridden in a Teaneck, N.J. hospital. "Dad had a stroke in November, two more later and has been fighting for his life. I try to spend as much time with him as possible."
