The malfunctioning of the safety warning system on a Guyana Airways 2000 (GA 2000) flight to New York on Friday, forced the plane to turn back after 40 minutes in flight and land using a single engine.

A release from GA 2000 said that the faulty indicator had signalled a problem with the left engine, which required it to be shut down. After the safe return and landing of the aircraft, a check revealed that the problem was the malfunctioning of the indicator.

The release said that a replacement for the part is expected by 1600 hrs today and the flight is now scheduled to depart at 1900 hrs today. Flights scheduled for yesterday have been affected.

Meanwhile, a GA 2000 official told Stabroek News that the plane had suffered a blow-out of four of its tyres when it landed. The source explained the blow-out of the tyres could have been as a result of the excessive landing weight given that the aircraft had been fuelled for its voyage to New York. An aviation source told this newspaper that the plane was about 200 miles from Guyana and 133 miles from Trinidad when it turned back.
