Ballistic examinations conducted on the firearms found at the scene of the stand-off between Linden 'Blackie' London and security forces last week have confirmed that three of them were used during four incidents of robbery under arms.
The police issued a press release yesterday stating that the AK-47 rifle was used during an armed robbery at Chelsea Park, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on July 10, 1998.
The sub-machine gun (SMG) was used during robberies at Vryheid's Lust, ECD, and Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, on August 10 last year, the police said. The release also stated that the SMG and a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun were used to commit an armed robbery at Industry Housing Scheme, ECD, on September 17, 1999.
The police said the results of "further examinations of the scenes of robberies and murder" will be revealed later.
During the robbery at Industry, six armed bandits opened a barrage of fire on a family and made off with $800,000. Another family was robbed of some $3.5 million in cash and jewellery during the Cummings Lodge robbery.
Another section of the media had reported that the police said London was wanted for the killing of police corporal Richard Faikal who was shot dead during the daring daylight $50 million robbery on the Anna Regina branch of Guyana National Cooperative Bank on November 21, 1997.
London's name was not included by the police in the list of wanted men who carried out that robbery. And none of the ballistic tests carried out so far have placed him at the Anna Regina robbery.
Five men were charged with the robbery and the shooting of the policeman. Wanted bulletins were issued for three others.
The men charged were Tulsie Persaud of Chance, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara and also of 44 Delph Street, Campbellville; Maurice Teixeira of 96 Middle Road, La Penitence; Rabindranauth Singh of 221 Patentia Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara; Steve Caesar of 733 La Penitence Housing Scheme; and Godfrey Smith called Godfrey Clark alias 'Soldier' of Adventure, Essequibo Coast. Persaud was said to have been the mastermind of the robbery.
Wanted bulletins were issued for Nizam Mohamed called `Boyo` of Enterprise, ECD; Patrick Gunraj of Better Hope, ECD; and Muniram Ramdular alias Jose Ramon Beria also known as 'Risco' of Second Street, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
It was also reported that London's rap sheet showed that he was wanted for robbery under arms committed at Republic Park in 1989; possession of arms and ammunition at Ogle Airstrip in 1995 where he allegedly threatened a policeman during the execution of his duties; murder committed on Jonathan Belle and Raul Casimero in 1996 in the Potaro area; attempted murder of four policemen in 1996--he allegedly threw a grenade at them in the Potaro area when they attempted to arrest him; possession of an explosive device at Potaro in 1996; robbery under arms in Georgetown where $60,000 was stolen; robbery under arms of $872,000 committed at Didco Trading Company in Georgetown in 1999; robbery under arms and attempted murder committed on D Singh and Sons Cambio and a cambio dealer in America Street in 1999; robbery under arms committed at Bhagwandin Rice Mills, Crane, West Bank Demerara in 1999; and robbery under arms committed on the National Insurance Scheme where the gunmen carted off $13 million, last month.
Police Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Ivelaw Whittaker, referred this newspaper to Crime Chief Floyd Mc Donald yesterday when contacted to confirm whether London was wanted for the Anna Regina bank robbery and why it was not mentioned before.
Mc Donald asked that Stabroek News get back to him as he was in a meeting. Further contact could not be made with the Crime Chief, although numerous attempts were made.
London was gunned down by security forces last week after an 11-hour siege in an apartment building located at East Bank Demerara. His funeral which took place yesterday attracted a huge crowd of mourners and the curious. A woman who was in the apartment at the time was also killed in the shoot-out between London and the security forces.
