The refurbished Melbourne Inn, originally the Alpha Guest House on Sheriff Street, was recently declared open by its owner.

The twenty-five apartment lodging, according to its owner, Godfrey Reid, was renovated at a cost of $8M. He said that coupled with the price he had paid for the building last October, he has spent some $25M since whilst there is still work to be done.

He described the hotel as a "small chain business" since the inn is the second of its kind - the first is located in Trinidad & Tobago.

Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Trade, Tessa Fraser, who made brief remarks at the opening, said the enterprise would assist Guyana in its tourism thrust by providing much-needed accommodation for persons who visit Guyana.

Fraser said the inn is strategically located in a very lively part of Georgetown.
