Small crowd at reconciliation rally

The Guyana Council of Churches (GCC) on Wednesday held a reconciliation rally in the hope of bringing all Guyanese together.
The rally started out with a walk from the St George's Cathedral, which moved through the Avenue of the Republic and into High Street then to the Parliament Buildings. A number of organisations, including religious and non religious took part in the proceedings which had just about 200 in attendance.
Co-ordinator of the rally and President of GCC, Bishop Juan Edghill, said that Wednesday's proceedings was just the start and he hoped more persons would join in next time.
The rally was attended by President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Sam Hinds and Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green.
It saw prayers and messages from the Bahai's, Muslims, Hindus and Christians.
Members of the Guyanese group First Born sang their popular piece "How are we going to survive if we keep taking one another's lives?". And Miriam Corlette's "We can stop the hate" saw those in attendance holding hands and moving to the music, including the President Jagdeo and the Prime Minister.
The groups who participated included the Guyana Trades Union Congress, Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, Working People's Alliance, Non Governmental Organisation Forum, Guyana Scout Association, Amerindian People's Association, PNC, Guyana Islamic Trust, The Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana, Mayor and City Council, PPP, Guyana Public Service Union, Guyenterprise, Guyana Agriculture and General Workers Union, Guyana Bar Association, Guyana Women's Lawyers Association and the Guyana Police Force.
