The World Boxing Association (WBA) number one ranked welterweight Andrew `Sixhead' Lewis has started winding down preparations for Saturday's world title clash against American James Page.
Yesterday at the Fernwood Resort in the Pocono Mountains, Philadelphia, Lewis wrapped up sparring sessions following a three- round engagement against American Lester Yardborough to carry his tally of rounds sparred to 130 since being encamped over five weeks ago.
Lewis' manager Nelson Fernandez has reiterated that the `Albouystown Cyclone' is in the "best shape of his life" and very focused for what will be the biggest day in Guyana's boxing history.
"We are done with sparring from now on. We will be concentrating on light work. I know that Andrew is in the best shape of his life and will make Guyana proud," Fernandez told Stabroek Sport after the final session.
According to Fernandez yesterday's sparring was scheduled for four rounds but had to be abbreviated since Lewis was all over his opponent. "He nearly had the guy out. This is a guy who went 10 rounds with Roy Jones and Oba Carr and has been a sparring partner for James Page quite a few times," Fernandez said.
"Lewis is in the best shape of his life. He is strong, fast and packs a wallop." The `Albouystown Cyclone' is scheduled to hit Las Vegas tomorrow morning (Tuesday) more than a week after Page landed in town.
Fernandez noted that Page has been sparring with David Semple, who, according to Lewis' manager, has been giving the former champion an arduous time. "We have been getting word that Page is having a hard time with his sparring partners. We have word that Semple gave him a beating not too long ago, claimed Fernandez.
Touching on the early arrival of Page in Las Vegas, Fernandez declared that it is all in the boxer's life style. " He likes to party and loves the lime light. I don't think that his reason for going there so early is to get acclimatize(d)," reasoned Fernandez.
Lewis and his entourage, which includes head trainer, Quinto Soto and Edgar Sanchez will stay at the MGM Grand Hotel, the venue for Saturday's fight. Lewis tipped the scale at 149 pounds yesterday and would have no problem making the 147 welterweight limit his manager said.
"We want to go to Vegas with about 150 pounds since you dehydrate fast there because of the heat," Fernandez concluded. The 30-year-old Guyanese southpaw and Page, who turns 30 on April 1, will battle for the vacant WBA crown.
Both fighters are guaranteed a purse of around US$200,000 each. Lewis is undefeated in 20 fights while Page, whose last bout was in July 1999, has been defeated thrice.
