After being inactive for most of last year recently crowned World Boxing Association welterweight champion Andrew `Sixhead' Lewis is back on busy street.
The lightning quick southpaw will make the first defence of his title on April 28 in New York where he is scheduled to put his title on the line against tough Colombian Nicolas Cevera who is rated 12th by the WBA.
Lewis manager Nelson Fernandez told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the `Albouystown Cyclone' has already started training for the defence but will shift to the Fernwood Resort in the Pocono Mountain from March 17.
Lewis will headline the card which will be televised by HBO KO Nation and includes undefeated lightweight Justo Sencion out of New York in the main supporting bout.
Fernandez said that at present three venues are being considered to stage the fight. "The venue as of now is not certain but Park Avenue Armory, Apollo Theater or Madison Square Garden are under consideration.
Lewis' promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions Fernandez said, has signalled an interest in staging the card in New York.
"Mr Arum's interest in having this card in New York is to really see and get the pulse as to how many Guyanese from the Brooklyn area will go out and support Lewis," Fernandez pointed out.
"Sencion side is expected to bring in about 500 fans," Fernandez opined. New York is densely populated by West Indians with an estimated Guyanese population of over 40,000.
Just over two weeks ago Lewis created history for the Land of Many Waters by becoming the first Guyanese to win a world boxing title following a seven round carnage of American James Page.
In a sensational performance Lewis (his first fight on HBO) dropped an out classed Page twice forcing referee Kenny Bayless to stop the fight after one minute 13 seconds of the seventh round.
The exhibition prompted the cable channel to sign him almost immediately for the April 28 bout and sparked unprecedented celebration in his birth place of Albouystown.
After the defeat of Page Arum had stated that the 30-year-old southpaw champion would have one fight before tackling World Boxing Council (WBC) `Sugar' Shane Mosley for a unification of belts and what is expected to be his most lucrative battle.
"Six has been in the gym since the Tuesday after he won against James Page and is around 154 pounds well in the range that we want him to be," Fernandez said.
Cervera has lost twice in 35 fights and has knocked out 30 opponents. He is two years younger that Lewis and hails from Pivijay, Colombia.
Although Fernandez did not disclose the purse for the upcoming bout it is expected that the Guyanese will receive much more than the US$200,000 he collected for crushing of Page.
Undefeated in 21 fights, the power-punching Lewis snatching of the WBA crown made him succeed where compatriots Patrick Forde, Lennox Blackmoore, Terrence Alli, Wayne Harris, Tony Marshall, Anthony Andrews, Steve Frank and Andrew Murray failed.
