Phase one of the much talked about Mount Roraima climb has begun
with the two main climbers - Rafael Downes and Alim Yacoob -
travelling to Mahdia by Land Rover. They are then to go by air to
Phillippi packed with supplies and equipment.
A press release stated that their mission was to set up the support
organisation with the local residents, check for conditions in the
rivers, trails and savannah, map the best route to the mountain, cut
or reopen trails wherever necessary, and identify possible climb
sites.
This phase is expected to last at least two weeks and it does not
involve the climbing of the mountain.
The organisers were high in praise for all those who contributed to
the cost of this phase and singled out: Edgar Daniels for logistics;
Mr Akbar for transportation; B.C. Cabs; Ariantze Hotel; Le Meridien
Pegasus Hotel; C&F; Ram & McRae; Rainforest Tours; and Banks
DIH Ltd.
The organisers are appealing to the entire community to support the
venture and noted that the team has gone in with less than half the
required cash and materials.
