GA 2000 has temporarily suspended operations, leaving the future of the carrier uncertain.
The airline has assured customers holding tickets that they will be placed on alternative flights.
A press release issued yesterday by the airline's communications consultants, PCCL, stated that "all persons holding tickets who are scheduled to travel [today] Tuesday 15 May" have been switched to "alternative flight arrangements with BWIA." An informed source estimated that 80 passengers were affected today.
Beyond today, the source expected a further announcement from GA 2000 as regards its future operations.
PCCL's release stated, "The Board of Directors is reviewing the position of the airline and will make a further announcement regarding its future operations at a later date."
For customers scheduled to travel with the airline after today, the release stated that "arrangements will be in place to transfer their tickets to North American Airlines or BWIA."
"All persons holding tickets with the airline are advised to contact the airline's offices in Guyana and North America with regard to their flight arrangements," the release stated.
According to the release, the suspension was "due to the delays in consummating a new lease arrangement with Ansett Worldwide for the continued operation of the B-757 aircraft."
This lease arrangement, according to PCCL Consultant, Kit Nascimento, was contingent upon the discussion GA 2000 was having with a potential investor.
The press release indicated that the airline expected to imminently conclude "arrangements for the acquisition of a majority interest in the airline by a new investor."
This latest development comes after the airline cut back its flight schedule last week. Nascimento confirmed last week that if an investor did not buy into the company, as was being negotiated, the lease arrangement with Ansett would be off.
