The date for the commencement of the GAC 2000 International service has been pushed back to around mid-June, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Anthony Mekdeci, has disclosed.

The first GAC 2000 flight was scheduled for May 27, from Toronto to Guyana and to New York the next day. However, Mekdeci, without going into details, said the service is now expected to start by mid-June.

He said the company was still in the process of recruiting staff. Aviation Investments Inc, a local company made up of several Guyanese businessmen is the majority shareholder with 51 percent while government has the remaining 49 percent.

The former GAC was privatised after encountering financial difficulties. The airline had gone through a series of mechanical and administrative failures before folding earlier this year.

Aviation Investments Inc successfully bid for the 51 percent share from among six other bidders. Since the final documents had been signed making the company the majority shareholder, the CEO and the directors have begun working towards getting the airline off the ground in time for the peak season which runs from July to September.
