Guyana Airways 2000 (GA 2000) yesterday started ticket sales for its inaugural flight to New York and Toronto, scheduled for June 17, and promises Guyanese will be pleasantly surprised with what the airline has to offer.
Tickets are on sale at the top floor of the old Guyana Airways Corporation ticketing office on Main Street and travel agencies. GA 2000 is the only non-stop international flight out of Guyana.
A 30-day fare to New York with taxes is US$686, while a year ticket with taxes is US$750. The airline will fly to Toronto every Monday and Thursday. A 30-day fare to this destination is US$684 and US$920 for a year ticket. Children 12 years and under will pay 67% of the adult fare.
Chief Executive Officer of GA 2000, Anthony Mekdeci, in an invited comment, told Stabroek News that some of what the airline has to offer would be made public shortly and Guyanese would be pleasantly surprised with what was available.
Chairman of GA 2000, Yesu Persaud, in announcing the June 17, start up said the company had secured the lease of an A300-600R, 278-seat airbus. Persaud had said the company was satisfied with the lease arrangements it had been able to negotiate.
He noted that the airbus, a long-haul aircraft, was just five years old and affords passenger comfort, baggage and cargo accommodation. "Our service would be non-stop, fast, prompt, comfortable and safe," he said.
Flight schedules have been designed for the most convenient arrival and departure times for Guyanese passengers especially those who have to travel long distances in Guyana to get to the airport, Persaud said.
The flight to Toronto will leave at 1530 hrs on Mondays and Thursdays. Flights to New York on Sundays, Wednesdays and Tuesdays will leave at 1530 hrs, and on Fridays at 0730 hrs. (Desiree Jodah)
