Guyana Airways (GA) 2000, this country's new flag carrier has been approved to operate a commercial service to Canada. Its first flight to that country is scheduled for Thursday.
A press statement from GA 2000's Chief Executive Officer, Anthony Mekdeci, said the airline and Nordstress Australia Pty Ltd had received the necessary approval to operate into Canada. This approval follows on the heels of the company's inaugural flight on Friday to New York.
GA 2000's first flight to Canada, which had been scheduled for June 17, had been postponed because the Canadian authorities had not completed the regulatory process for the issue of the appropriate approval to Nordstress, from which GA 2000 had chartered its airbus.
The new company which comprises several local businessmen and members of the Aircraft Owners Association of Guyana--making up Aviation Investment Inc, which holds the majority 51 percent in the new company with government holding 49 percent--had had a bumpy start. But it seems to have straightened out its problems.
The inaugural New York flight, although it left over an hour late because of the malfunctioning of the computer at the airport, was a smooth, pleasant one. Passengers were treated to courteous and efficient service by the Guyanese and Australian flight attendants. (Desiree Jodah)
